Rare offering in the Shenandoah Valley...

As depicted in this watercolor painting by noted historic artist Connie Ward Woolard, this building on Lee Highway in Mt. Crawford, Virginia is a rare example of a fading chapter in America's history.

The Valley Pike was the main thoroughfare for trade and commerce through the Shenandoah Valley. Constructed in 1850, this building served as a stop-off point between Harrisonburg and Staunton Virginia, serving travelers as a general store, livery and meeting place. On these pourches, spectators watched General Lee's troops parade by -- on their way to an encounter with Union forces, and destiny.

For more than 60 years, the store was operated by the Childs family. Mr. Childs also operated the grain mill on Naked Creek, a few miles south, which provided flour for the bread bakers of a growing population.

In 1930s, the building was sold to the Saufley family and Larue established a buy-sell furniture shop to augment her husband's refinishing business. As traffic increased and well-to-do northerners passed through on their way south, a growing interest in antiques prompted Larue to rename the store, Mt. Crawford Antiques. With its signature Carousel Horse on the front porch, thousands of travelers came to know this spot as the premier antique shop in the Shenandoah Valley. In 1987 the building was purchased by the Showker family. Avid antique researcher and collector, Charlotte Showker, then continued the tradition of fine antiquities in this location. Over the next twenty years Chalot's Antiques attained national noteriety in the antique field.

Now retired, Showker has closed her antique business for good. The building is available for the next owner to continue the tradition.

Upon inspection, you'll see many fixtures still in place after more than 150 years. The main floor girders are hewn from whole tree trunks -- many mortise & pinion or wood peg fastenings can be seen, unchanged for over a century.
