Insurance trouble in Augusta County

A contract dispute between Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, the state’s biggest health insurer, and the emergency room doctors at Augusta Health could mean much bigger bills for ER visits. But it also could force people to ask questions they’re not used to: Do I really need the ER? Can I afford to go?

Jerry H. Smith still remembers the time, two years back, when worry about his heart set him off down the road to Augusta Health — and how once on the road, he wondered whether it’d be better to head over the mountain to U.Va. Medical Center since his cardiologist had had to leave.
